RegLocker:
Have you ever wondered why did we need to put number plates on our
vehicles in the first place? And where did number plates originate from? If not, it probably will now, so please keep reading!
The government needed a way to trace an automobile back to its owner because the number of vehicles was quickly increasing around the turn of the century. As a result, there were more accidents, and there was no way to track down the owners of the automobiles.
The number plate idea was created here, and it allowed cars to be tracked simply in the event of an accident or a violation of the law. This was known as the ‘Motor Car Act of 1903.' On January 1, 1904, this became law, and every motor vehicle was required to have a number plate.
Since the launch of the first number plate, many number plate formats were introduced throughout history to get through the current issues of those generations. There was an influx of cars on the UK roads. The more cars meant the more number plates required. After every while, a new number plate system was introduced to cover up the limitations of previous number plate systems.
Let’s discuss briefly about every number plate format introduced:
Prefix Number Plates:
Prefix notation was first introduced in 1983 as a number plate system for UK vehicles. Prefix number plates are one of the most popular number plates one can see whilst driving or interacting with cars. It has a long history behind it. This series of number plates was concluded and ended in the year 2001.
Dateless Number Plates:
Dateless number plates are the oldest and rarest registration plates that were introduced by local licensing authorities in 1903. As the name suggests are the type of number plates that don’t have an age identifier means these plates lack a letter or number combination that indicates the year of issue and distinguishes the age of a vehicle. Therefore, with a dateless number plate, it is almost impossible to tell how old a vehicle is without doing some deep research.
Current Style Number Plates:
The current style number plates format for UK registrations was introduced by the DVLA in September 2001 when they ran out of letters for prefix number plates. That was the year when the prefix number plate system came to an end, however, this new style format is expected to have sufficient numbers to run until 2064. This number plate format is also known as new-style format which we use to date. Means today’s number plates that are used on cars in the UK are based on the current style number plates format.
Suffix Style Number Plates:
Suffix style registrations were introduced by the DVLA in February 1963 as a replacement of dateless style number plates. There were two main reasons for introducing this new style. One was they were running out of combinations for dateless number plates and the second was following the issue of identifying vehicles age. With the launch of suffix registrations, they introduced a new age identifier feature where they added a letter at the end of the registration which would not only help in identifying the vehicle’s manufacturing year but also increase the number of possible combinations by millions so that they don’t run of registration numbers keeping in mind the increasing number of vehicles on the UK roads.
Types of Number Plates:
Motorists can choose from multiple different kinds of number plates based on the number plate formats discussed above. For example, standard registration plates, cherished number plates, 3D and 4D plates which are designed by laser cut technology to print 4D Acrylic letters, short plates, and many more.

3D and 4D plates are somewhat similar to each other however, there is some key difference between how each of them is made. Due to the laser cut precision and method, 4D number plates do not just look better, they also allow a lot more in terms of quality and customization as compared to 3D plates. Just like standard and 3D plates, 4D reg plates can also have badges and borders, customized fittings, or different sizes and shapes.
