Established on July 10, 1946, Dhaka Medical College (DMC) holds the distinction of being the first medical college in Bangladesh. Its original building predates the partition of Bengal in 1905. Presently, there are 37 government and 72 private medical colleges in Bangladesh offering MBBS programs to both local and international students. All these medical colleges are affiliated with seven universities, with four being government and the remaining three private. These universities conduct professional examinations in accordance with the guidelines set by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and the Government of Bangladesh. The regulatory authority overseeing MBBS programs in Bangladesh is the Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council (BM&DC), and all medical colleges must be affiliated with this council. Strict supervision of medical colleges is maintained by the Ministry of Health and BM&DC. The Government of Bangladesh reserves 104 seats (92 MBBS seats and 12 BDS seats) for eligible students from South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, etc. Seat allocation is based on merit, and admission under the SAARC quota is facilitated through recommendations from the respective country. Reasons to pursue MBBS studies in Bangladesh are manifold: 1. Affordable tuition fees compared to Indian private medical colleges. 2. Straightforward admission process and visa requirements. 3. International recognition of the study program. 4. English as the primary language of instruction. 5. Opportunity for free admission to government medical colleges for SAARC students. 6. Curriculum based on Indian textbooks and journals. 7. Availability of internship opportunities and exposure to diverse patient cases. 8. Separate accommodations for male and female students. 9. Similar culture, food habits, and languages (English, Bengali, and Hindi) as in India. 10. A safe and welcoming environment with a moderate climate. 11. Many medical colleges in Bangladesh are approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI) Act 1956, ensuring quality education. 12. Strict prohibition of alcohol and drug consumption in Bangladesh.
Indian students currently make up a portion of the international student body at Azerbaijan Medical University, totaling 1,200 students from 21 different countries. Among these, over 200 Indian students have been enrolled at the university for the past six years. However, these numbers are relatively low compared to other popular destinations for Indian students pursuing MBBS abroad. Those seeking alternative options within a similar budget may consider studying MBBS in Bangladesh, Egypt, Kazakhstan, and other countries. The MBBS education system in Azerbaijan comprises a six-year program that includes clinical rotations as an integral component. Azerbaijan Medical University offers its MBBS program in three languages: English, Russian, and Azerbaijani. Students from Asian countries such as India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka typically opt for the English-taught program, while those from Central Asian countries like Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan prefer the Russian-taught program. Local students from Uzbekistan may also enroll in the Azerbaijan program. Unlike Russia and Georgia, Azerbaijan does not adhere to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). To secure a place in the MBBS program at Azerbaijan Medical University, particularly, applicants must time their applications correctly. The optimal time for application is typically before July 15th each year in Azerbaijan. The challenge lies not in obtaining the admission letter but primarily in acquiring the invitation letter and completing the visa process, which can take approximately two months to be issued by the Ministry of Education and the consulate of Azerbaijan. A visa is granted solely based on this invitation letter. Furthermore, according to university regulations, students are required to pay full fees to the university before their departure.
