Established on July 10, 1946, Dhaka Medical College (DMC) holds the distinction of being the first medical college in Bangladesh. Its original building predates the partition of Bengal in 1905. Presently, there are 37 government and 72 private medical colleges in Bangladesh offering MBBS programs to both local and international students. All these medical colleges are affiliated with seven universities, with four being government and the remaining three private. These universities conduct professional examinations in accordance with the guidelines set by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and the Government of Bangladesh. The regulatory authority overseeing MBBS programs in Bangladesh is the Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council (BM&DC), and all medical colleges must be affiliated with this council. Strict supervision of medical colleges is maintained by the Ministry of Health and BM&DC. The Government of Bangladesh reserves 104 seats (92 MBBS seats and 12 BDS seats) for eligible students from South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, etc. Seat allocation is based on merit, and admission under the SAARC quota is facilitated through recommendations from the respective country.
