Introduction In order to practice medicine within the United States, passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a prerequisite. Sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), the USMLE consists of three main steps: Step 1, Step 2CK, and Step 3. Among these, Step 1 is a pivotal assessment typically undertaken after the second year of medical school. This one-day, computer-based exam evaluates candidates' grasp of fundamental sciences crucial for medical practice. Step 1 evaluates candidates' comprehension of essential concepts and principles in the basic sciences, emphasizing their application to health, disease, and treatment. It also ensures candidates possess a robust foundation in scientific principles essential for ongoing learning in medicine. Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible to take the USMLE Step 1, candidates must meet certain criteria: 1. For U.S. or Canadian medical school graduates pursuing the MD degree accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). 2. For U.S. medical school graduates pursuing the DO degree accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must meet additional requirements to be eligible for Step 1: 1. Enrollment in a medical college or university listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS). 2. Fulfillment of other eligibility criteria as outlined by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
