Introduction
The USMLE Step 3 marks the culmination of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) series, serving as the final assessment in the sequence. This comprehensive exam spans two days and evaluates a candidate's ability to apply medical knowledge and understand biological and clinical science concepts essential for the independent practice of medicine, with a particular focus on patient management in ambulatory settings.
When to Take USMLE Step 3
Step 3 is typically undertaken upon completion of medical school and residency training, as it is a prerequisite for obtaining an unrestricted medical license in the United States.
The Step 3 exam comprises two parts:
Part 1: This section consists of 232 multiple-choice questions covering various topics such as patient management, history and physical examination, lab and diagnostic studies, diagnosis, prognosis, and pathophysiology.
Part 2: The second part features 16 computer-based case simulations, each presenting a patient scenario where candidates must make decisions regarding patient care.
